Isaiah 17-18

These are the original teaching notes from this passage.
  • Burden of Moab…
    • The THIRD burden of Isaiah was against the Kingdom of MOAB [of his father]
    • The Assyrian empire would come and destroy them…
    • Their walled cities would fall – and their religion would NOT save them…
    • As in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah – like the daughters of Lot – they would run to Zoar…
    • From there they would hide in the mountains – hide in caves [how Moab began]
    • But there would be NO place to hide – their MONEY would NOT save them…
    • Anyone who escaped from Assyria – would be killed by lions!
    • Fall of Moab…
    • Isaiah told Moab to give a LAMB to the King of Jerusalem [rebuild the friendship]
    • And commanded Judah to receive the refugees coming from Moab…
    • But also told Moab that in the future [Tribulation] – they were to take in refugees from Israel…
    • Because we need each other – and we are commanded to help one another…
    • Yet because of the PRIDE of Moab – they would FALL…
    • For in their hour of need – they went to all the WRONG places [idols – false gods]
    • Therefore – they had THREE years left until God would reduce them to a REMNANT!
  • 1st – The Remnant… vs. 1-8
    • 1st – The Burden… vs. 1-2
      • Syria… vs. 1
      • The burden against Damascus!
      • Isaiah continued his BURDENS against the Nations…
      • A section of the book that gives TEN burdens from the Lord – Isaiah 13-23
      • BURDEN [מַשָּׂא] – a heavy weight or load – a warning to the nations…
      • The FOURTH of these burdens was against the Kingdom of Syria [Damascus]!
      • This passage is closely tied to – Isaiah 7
      • King Ahaz was the son of Jotham [good king] – grandson of Uzziah [good king]
      • But he was NOT a good king – even sacrificed his children to MOLECH – II Kings 16:3
      • Therefore the king of Syria [Rezin] and Israel [Pekah] defeated Judah in battle [735 B.C.]
      • But God sent Isaiah to Ahaz – he was NOT to fear because Jerusalem would NOT fall…
      • To help give him FAITH – God would send a SIGN – Isaiah 7:14
      • A young woman [virgin] would have a SON – he would be called IMMANUEL [God with us]
      • Before the boy was TWO years old – Rezin and Pekah would be defeated by ASSYRIA!
      • Ruins… vs. 1
      • Behold Damascus will cease from being a city – and it will be a ruinous heap!

      • Damascus – the capitol city of Syria – would stop [hophal] being a CITY…
      • It would become [prophetic perfect] a pile of RUINS [cast down]!
      • Too often we look at our CIRCUMSTANCES – not at what the Lord SAYS…
      • It does NOT matter how bleak things look – how overwhelming our problems might seem…

      • Abandoned… vs. 2
      • The cities of Aroer are forsaken.
      • They will be for flocks which lie down – and no one will make them afraid!
      • The name Aroer can refer to a city east of the Jordan river – II Samuel 24:5
      • But it is more likely referring to RUINED [עֲרוֹעֵר] cities [καταλελειμμένη εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα] – LXX
      • Rather than being a place for PEOPLE to live in…
      • Their cities of Syria would be a place for SHEEP to lay down [pastures]

      • Would be so devastated there would NO one left in their cities!
      • Meaning the thing that terrifies us TODAY – will NOT even be there TOMORROW…
      • It is unfortunate how much time we waste worrying…
      • We fret about a problem – only to see it disappear [God takes care of it]
      • But we just move onto the next problem – and keep worrying…
      • How much better to just keep our eyes on the one who is greater than EVERY problem!

      • It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain in the Valley of Rephaim!
      • In that DAY it would come to pass [prophetic perfect]
      • The GLORY of Jacob [rebellious] would fail [דָּלַל]
      • And those who were blessed [fat] – would lose [niphal] everything [skinny]
      • The land of both Israel and Syria would look like [כִּ] a harvested field…
      • Not just ANY field – it would be like [כִּ] the Valley of Rephaim [giants]!
      • When the Philistines attacked King David – they met in the Valley of Rephaim…

      • SECOND time – God told David to come at them from the trees – II Samuel 5:23
      • Both times David was VICTORIOUS – because he looked to the Lord!

      • Four or five in its most fruitful branches: Says the LORD God of Israel!
      • Yet in the midst of the destruction – there would be a REMNANT…

      • They will NO longer LOOK [רָאָה] to the things their HANDS have made…
      • WOODEN images [אֲשֵׁרָה] and IDOLS [חַמָּנִים]!
      • This might well have a DUAL fulfillment…
      • No doubt there were some Jews who lived in the Northern Kingdom…

      • LXX – interprets these pictures with specific examples…
      • The cities of Israel will be abandoned like the AMORITES [Αμορραῖοι] and HIVITES [Ευαῖοι]
      • The key is WHEN these cities were ABANDONED…

      • THEREFORE [עַל־כֵּן] – although Israel planted the FINEST plants…
      • They would even get SEEDS from faraway lands [luxurious]
      • And in the DAY when they plant them – they would GROW [piel] in the morning…
      • But in the DAY of harvest – they would only gather GREIF and incurable SORROW!
      • Galatians 6:7 – “God is not mocked for whatever a man sows – that he will also reap.”
      • There is no reason why we should be surprised by the outcome of our choices…

      • If we lack MONEY – we look to those who are RICH…
      • If we are UNHEALTHY – then we look to those who can HEAL…

      • What tends to get us into the most trouble – is a lack of PATIENCE…
      • Because we see the PROBLEM – but do NOT see God working on a SOLUTION…
      • Therefore we feel the need to HELP God out [never ends well]
      • The better answer is to learn to WAIT upon the Lord – His TIMING…

      • We have the tendency to LOOK to people as the ANSWER…
      • But the truth is they are NO different than we are – they also need HELP…
      • We are NOT called to be SOLUTION – we point others to Him…
      • Because no matter what we are facing – what TRIAL we are in…
      • The only place we are going to find HOPE – is from the Lord!
