Salvation in Jesus… (3 points)
- 1st – Jesus DIED for us… vs. 5-9
- 1st – The WORLD to come… vs. 5
- Having given the FIRST warning – NOT to neglect so great a SALVATION…
- The writer FINISHES showing Jesus is GREATER than ANGELS…
- For (furthermore) God did NOT put the WORLD to come in SUBJECTION to ANGELS!
- WORLD to come – TWO possibilities…
- After the RAPTURE of the church – I Thessalonians 4:14-17
- The SEVEN years of tribulation – and SECOND COMING of Jesus – Revelation 19:11-21
- Jesus will establish His Millennial Kingdom – Revelation 20:1-4!
- Where the whole world will be SUBJECT [hypotassō] to Jesus!
- At the end of the Millennial Kingdom…
- All will stand before the Great White Throne to be judged Revelation 20:11-12
- Then the heavens and earth will pass away with a great noise – II Peter 3:10 / Isaiah 34:4
- Then God will create a – prefect – sinless – NEW heaven / NEW earth – Revelation 21-22
- Where the whole world will AGAIN be SUBJECT [hypotassō] to Jesus!
- Either way the POINT is the same – the WORLD to come is SUBJECT to Jesus…
- Jesus is GREATER than the ANGELS – because EVERYTHING will be SUBJECT to Him!
- Since EVERYTHING will one day be SUBJECT to Jesus – He is greater than ANYTHING…
- Why then we put our FAITH / TRUST in ANYTHING less than Jesus!
- We all have FAITH – Romans 12:3 – the question is where we put our FAITH…
- Matthew 8:10 Jesus talked about great FAITH – Matthew 8:26 little FAITH…
- That would lead us to believe FAITH is measurable – strong / great or little / weak…
- But Jesus would clarify when the disciples asked to INCREASE our FAITH…
- Luke 17:6 – “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree…”
- FAITH is not about quantity or quality – it is about WHO we put our trust in…
- We have great FAITH – when Jesus is the one we are putting our TRUST in!
- Having given the FIRST warning – NOT to neglect so great a SALVATION…
- 2nd – What is MAN… vs. 6-8
- Quoting Psalm 8:4-6 – the writer asks TWO questions about MEN…
- What is man that you are MINDFUL [present] of him – to be constantly REMINDED…
- Or the Son of Man that you TAKE CARE [present] of him – to constantly WATCH…
- The idea being why is God CONCERNED about men – why are they important to Him!
- In RESPONSE – the author gives FOUR descriptions of MEN!
- Made LOWER than the ANGELS…
- ANGELS – [אֱלֹהִים] – in Hebrew the word ELOHIM translated here in context as ANGELS…
- Both ANGELS and MEN are created by God – Colossians 1:16 / John 1:3
- But ANGELS are certainly more POWERFUL than MEN – Isaiah 37:36
- CROWNED with glory and honor…
- Although MEN are LOWER than ANGELS – God CROWNED men with glory and honor…
- Speaking of the position God gave men – created in His IMAGE!
- Genesis 1:27 – “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
- Set them OVER the work of your hands…
- When God created Adam and Eve – He gave them DOMINION over the world!
- God put EVERYTHING under SUBJECTION to MEN – nothing was left out!
- Quoting Psalm 8:4-6 – the writer asks TWO questions about MEN…
- 1st – The WORLD to come… vs. 5
- Genesis 1:26 – “Let them have dominion… over ALL the earth and over EVERY creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
- BUT now (today) – we do NOT see ALL things under men…
- When you buy a house – you are given a DEED to show you are the owner…
- But if give someone else the DEED – you no longer have authority over the house!
- God created the world – gave the DEED to Adam and Eve – Genesis 1:28-30
- When Adam and Eve choose to sin in the garden – rebel against God – Genesis 3
- They sold the DEED of the world to satan – he had the rights to this world…
- Satan is called the god of this world – II Corinthians 4:4 / John 14:30
- 3rd – We SEE Jesus… vs. 9
- But we SEE Jesus – MADE a little lower than ANGELS…
- MADE (perfect) – 3x NT – better translated as DEMOTED…
- John 3:30 – “He must increase, but I must decrease [same word].”
- Speaking of the INCARNATION – God becoming a MAN – Matthew 1:23
- For the SUFFERING of DEATH…
- That by the GRACE of God – He might taste DEATH for EVERY man…
- All of us are SINNERS – there are no exceptions – Romans 3:23
- And there is only ONE PENALTY for sin – eternal death / hell – Romans 6:23
- But God LOVE us so much – He came and paid our DEBT for us – John 3:16
- God came as a man – John 1:1 – and lived a perfect sinless life…
- Jesus Christ – the only perfect man – paid the price for our sin on the cross!
- Philippians 2:7-8 – “[He] made Himself of no reputation… coming in the likeness of men… He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
- In that moment Jesus CONDEMNED sin – DEFEATED sin once and for all!
- Then came the great mysteries of the ages – God GAVE us His RIGHTEOUSNESS!
- II Corinthians 5:21 – “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”
- Now when God looks down on us – He does not see our sinful mistakes / flaws…
- He instead sees the perfect life of His Son Jesus – He sees us as perfect / flawless!
- CROWNED (perfect) with Glory and Honor…
- Jesus came to redeem the DEED that had been lost…
- The price Jesus had to pay to redeem the world – was the cross!
- Revelation 5:2-5 – we are told the no one could open the scroll – the DEED…
- John wept – no one was able to REDEEM the world that had been lost to satan…
- But the Angel said do not weep – behold the LION of the Tribe of Judah – Jesus!
- Jesus redeemed the world – He purchased back WORLD that had been lost!
- But we SEE Jesus – MADE a little lower than ANGELS…
- BUT now (today) – we do NOT see ALL things under men…
Philippians 1:6 – “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
2nd – Jesus SANCTIFIED us… vs. 10-13
1st – Changing our POSITION… vs. 10-11
As a RESULT of Jesus SUFFERING and DEATH – we are SANCTIFIED… vs. 11
Both He who SANCTIFIES (active) and we who are SANCTIFIED (passive) are ONE…
Hagiazō – 29x in NT – to be HOLY – set apart for God!
Do NOT miss – Jesus is the ONE who does ALL the WORK – we just RECEIVE it!
The moment we believe in the cross of Christ – we are forgiven – JUSTIFIED…
We are also made positionally HOLY – SANCTIFIED – set apart for the Lord!
Although we are SANCTIFIED positionally – we are still sinners practically…
Therefore – we need to learn to WALK in HOLINESS – learn to be SET APART!
As a RESULT of being SANCTIFIED – we are called the SONS of God…
For it was fitting for Jesus – for whom are ALL THINGS – by whom are ALL THINGS…
The CAPTAIN of our salvation was made PERFECT through His SUFFERINGS – the CROSS…
To BRING many SONS to glory – speaking of our POSITION!
We can only be SONS of one of two kingdoms…
We are either the SONS of God – or we are the SONS of this world – John 8:44
There is NO hope for us to be SAVED if we are still the SONS of this world…
But once we are born again – saved through the CROSS – we have a change of FAMILY…
We no longer belong to this world – we are now SONS of GOD!
2nd – Changing our RELATIONSHIP… vs. 11-12
As a RESULT of being SANCTIFIED – Jesus is NOT ashamed to call us BROTHERS…
Psalm 22:22 – I will certainly DECLARE (cohortative) your name to my BROTHERS…
The word BROTHERS – speaking of our RELATIONSHIP to Jesus!
A BOSS does not confide in an EMPLOYEE…
If a BOSS is having a bad day – he is NOT going to tell his EMPLOYEES …
And an EMPLOYEE is not going to be open in talking about his problems with his BOSS!
John 15:15 – “No longer do I call you SERVANTS, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you FRIENDS, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
Because we are SANCTIFIED – Jesus now opens up His life to us – tells us EVERYTHING…
We are NO longer SERVANTS – He considered us His BROTHERS / FRIENDS…
He should be our BEST FRIEND – who we share EVERYTHING with EVERY day!
3rd – Changing our ACCESS… vs. 13
As a RESULT of being SANCTIFIED – we are CHILDREN…
And we put our TRUST (faith) in Him – Isaiah 8:17
Like little kids never question if their parents are going to be there for them…
They have perfect trust in their parents to take care of their needs!
Jesus will take care of ALL our worries – BECAUSE we are His KIDS – Luke 12:29-31
Worry is the opposite of trust – we are worried because we are not trusting in God!
Instead of worrying we should cast our cares / problems at the feet of Jesus!
Being CHILDREN – speaks our ACCESS to the FATHER
Here am I and [with] the CHILDREN God has given to Me – Isaiah 8:18
When I am studying – I do my best to remove all distractions – keep my focus…
But my daughter ALWAYS has ACCESS – she can DISTRACT me ANYTIME!
ANYTIME we have ACCESS to our HEAVENLY FATHER – because we are His Kids!
Hebrews 4:16 – “Let us therefore [subjunctive] come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
3rd – Jesus HELPS us… vs. 14-18
1st – Overcome the DEVIL… vs. 14
Jesus became a MAN – so He could DIE on the cross…
As the children are partakers of flesh and blood – [Jesus] likewise shared in the same!
Hebrews 2:14 – “Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die…” [NLT]
That through THE death (cross) – He might DESTROY…
DESTROY – to put an end to – him who had the POWER of THE DEATH (hell)!
The DEVIL – diablos – used 38x NT – means he accuses us!
Satan seeks to ACCUSE us – wants to see us condemned to hell – Revelation 12:10
He has all the EVIDENCE he needs – all our sins / our immoral thoughts…
But Jesus DESTROYED the power of satan – so that he has nothing to ACCUSE us of…
All our sins were paid for in full on the cross – we are untouchable in Jesus!
Colossians 2:13-16 – “Having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
2nd – Overcome FEAR… vs. 15
Jesus DIED – so He might RELEASE (subjunctive) MEN from the FEAR of DEATH…
RELEASE those who through FEAR of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage!
The greatest fear of all men is the fear of death – because it is an unknown…
Because some fear it is an end / but most of all because it means we will be judged!
But we have no need to fear DEATH – it has not sting / no bite for us…
We know that it is not the end – far from it – it is the beginning of eternal life…
We know what will happen when we die – we get to go to HEAVEN!
I Corinthians 15:55/57 – “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? …But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
3rd – Overcome TEMPTATION… vs. 16/18
Jesus did NOT give AID to ANGELS…
Give AID – 19x in NT – the word is most often translated as TAKE…
Jesus did NOT take the form of ANGELS – He took the form of the seed of ABRAHAM (man)!
It would appear Angels had a CHOICE to follow of rebel against God – Revelation 12:4
But those who did rebel have NO hope of redemption – God does not AID them…
When God judged Satan – He revealed that He was a righteous and JUST God!
When He did not condemn Adam and Eve – He revealed He was a MERCIFUL!
But the complete revelation of God did not come until Jesus Christ…
He died in our place for our sins and revealed the GRACE and Love of God!
I Peter 1:12 – “This Good News has been announced to you… It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.” [NLT]
Jesus became a MAN – so He could SUFFER – and be TEMPTED…
SUFFER (perfect) – speaking of the work on the CROSS…
TEMPTED – peirazō 38x in NT – can alternately be translated as Trials …
James 1:2 – “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials [same root].”
A TEMPTATION is something that satan comes at us with!
Satan would love nothing more than to destroy us – we are on the top of his hit list!
But often are often tempted because where we go / what we look at…
We put ourselves in positions where we are going to be tempted!
A TRIAL is something the Lord allows into our lives…
After Israel entered the Promised Land – a new generation rose that did not know God…
They found themselves in a Land littered with godless people…
God used these enemies to give Israel an option – whom did they want to serve!
Judges 2:22 – “I may test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord…”
You do not get to really know who someone is when life is easy…
The real test of character is how they act when life falls apart…
God uses trials in life to turn up the HEAT – let us see what we are made of…
God already knows – but He wants US to see what is in OUR hearts!
BECAUSE – Jesus was TEMPTED – He can give [dynamai] us AID…
AID – 8x NT – to HELP – not the same word used back in VERSE 16…
There is an old saying – WALK a mile in MY shoes…
In order to understand me – you have to live like me – face the same struggles!
It is easy to think a PERFECT – HOLY God could never RELATE to sinners like us…
But Jesus WALKED in our shoes – He faced the same TEMPTATIONS!
As a RESULT – FIRST He can UNDERSTAND the TEMPTATION we face…
He is NOT surprised when we stumble – He does NOT get angry when we fail!
SECOND – He has a heart to want to HELP us overcome those TEMPTATIONS…
NEVER hesitate to come to Jesus – He has the POWER to help us overcome sin!
I Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
4th – MERCIFUL High Priest… vs. 17
Therefore [hothen] – in all things He HAD [imperfect] to be LIKE His brethren…
Jesus HAD to constantly [imperfect] face all the same TEMPTATIONS we do in life…
That He might be [subjunctive] a MERCIFUL and FAITHFUL – HIGH PRIEST…
A PRIEST is a go between – he represents God to the people / and the people to God!
The problem is we have all sinned – and been separated from God – Romans 3:23
To stand before God now – would be to face the wrath and judgment of God…
Therefore – we need a mediator – someone to go before God on our behalf…
Someone to bridge the gap – give us access to our Holy God!
I Timothy 2:5 – “One Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus…”
To make PROPITIATION for the sins of the people…
PROPITIATION – 2x in NT – Giving a good chance of success / favor…
We might say Jesus is our CHEERLEADER – He is constantly ENCOURAGING us!
We assume that God is up there with His holy 2×4 ready to smack us down when we sin…
But it is just the OPPOSITE – Jesus – who is BETTER than EVERYONE and EVERYTHING…
PAID for our sin – DEFEATED death – and SANCTIFIED us!
Now – we are SONS of God – FRIENDS – CHILDREN with ACCESS to the Father…
And He has become our HIGH PRIEST – who can RELATE to our TEMPTATION…
Encouraging us to keep our eyes on Him as He finishes the work He began in our lives!
