The 2nd coming of Jesus (5 things)

  • 1st – The 1st destruction of Jerusalem… vs. 20-24
    • Jesus predicts an army coming to conquer the city of Jerusalem… vs. 20-21
      • It was fulfilled in two events – one that has already occurred / one yet to happen…
        • The first fulfillment was in 70 AD when the Romans surrounded Jerusalem…
        • Jesus warned ‘those in the city to flee – those in the country to stay out…’
        • Christians obeyed so there were very few in the city when the Romans destroyed it!
      • The Jews in the city were not so fortunate… vs. 24
        • Because they did not listen to the warning of Jesus – they were left behind…
        • And as Jesus predicted they were – ‘brutally killed by the sword’ – over 1 million!
        • The 100,000 who remained were – ‘sent away as captives to all the nations’…
        • The nation of Israel was destroyed – and Jerusalem was no longer a Jewish city…
        • We only have two options when it comes to the Word of God – obey or disobey…
        • God is a gentleman – He does not force us to obey – He gives us a choice…
        • Joshua 24:15 – “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…”
        • We do not choose to be blessed or cursed – that we be an easy choice…
        • We choose who we live for – do we live for God / or for ourselves…
        • It is a choice we make everyday – whom do we choose to serve…
      • For 2000 years Jerusalem was under the rule of Gentile nations… vs. 24
        • The Romans ruled it from 70 A.D. – 313 A.D. (250 years)
        • Byzantine Empire (Rome converted to Christianity) – 314 A.D. – 635 A.D. (320 years)
        • Arab Caliphate – (early Muslim conquerors) – 636 A.D. – 1098 A.D. (400 years)
        • The Crusaders – (European Christians) – 1099 A.D. – 1184 A.D. (100 years)
        • Muslims / Ottoman Empire – 1185 A.D. – 1917 A.D. (700 years)
        • English Empire – (after the fall of the Ottomans in WWI) – 1918 A.D. – 1948 A.D.
      • Until the time of the Gentiles is complete…
        • God set aside Israel for a time – and today uses the church to speak to the world…
        • But there are a set number of people who will receive Jesus as their savior…
        • Romans 11:25 – “Blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in…”
        • No one but God knows the number – or who will be the last gentile to be saved…
        • But when the ‘Last Gentile’ to believe – receives Jesus – the rapture of the church!
        • Then God will again use Israel as his mouthpiece to speak to the world!
  • 2nd – The 2nd destruction of Jerusalem… vs. 25-26
    • Daniel 9:24-27 – the 70 weeks of Daniel – the key to unlock End Time Prophecy…
      • Israel is God’s prophetic watch/ timer – it is how God ‘tells time’ prophetically…
      • God told Daniel there were 490 left for Israel until God established His Kingdom…
      • The starting date – the command to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem – Nehemiah 2:1-8
      • But Daniel also predicted the death of Jesus Christ  – after only 483 years!
      • At which point God’s clock stopped – and waited – it has been stopped for 2000 years!
    • The Tribulation….
      • The clock will start up again when the Anti-Christ makes peace with Israel…
      • The thought is in the aftermath of the rapture (1 billion people disappear)
      • And after the Magog invasion (God destroys armies of Russia and the Arabs)
      • The world will be in chaos – one man will step up offering peace and safety…
      • He will make peace by offering to rebuild the 3rd Temple for Israel…
      • The Anti-Christ will be received as the Jewish Messiah – rebuilding the Temple…
      • Thus starting the last 7 years on God’s watch – the 7 years of Tribulation
    • The powers of heaven shaken…
      • 3 ½ years into the Tribulation the Anti-Christ will perform the Abomination!
      • The Anti-Christ will enter the rebuilt 3rd temple – into the Holiest of All…
      • The footstool of God – where the Ark of the Covenant once stood (1st Temple only)
      • There he will proclaim he is god – and should be worshiped by the world…
      • He will break his peace treaty with Israel – and destroy Jerusalem again!
    • The start of the Great Tribulation…
      • The terror of the tribulation will be so great – unless those days were shortened…
      • No one would survive – but for the sake of those who will accept Jesus – shortened…
      • The bad news – anyone who does not believe in Jesus has this to look forward to…
      • But if we believe in Jesus we will not go through the Tribulation…
      • Jesus will take us to heaven before hand in the rapture of the church…
      • Really good motivation to believe in Jesus today – II Corinthians 6:2
      • People can be saved during the Tribulation – but you will have to go through it…
      • And the end result will be you will have to die – beheaded – for your faith in Jesus…
  • Revelation 20:4 – “Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast…”
  • 3rd – The return of Jesus Christ… vs. 27
    • At the end of the Tribulation – Jesus coming through the clouds – riding out of heaven…
      • Revelation 19:11 – “I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.”
      • He comes with the sound of a trumpet – with all the elect…
      • Revelation 19:14 – “And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.”
    • It is the Great and Terrible day of the Lord – the day the sins of men are judged!
      • For any and all who have chosen to reject Jesus Christ – its reckoning time!
      • Philippians 2: 9-10 – “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth…”
      • It is not a question of if you will bow to Jesus Christ – just when…
      • You can choose not to believe in Jesus – go through the Tribulation…
      • Then – if you manage to survive – face the Great and Terrible day – Judgment day…
      • Or you can believe in Jesus today – spend the Tribulation in Heaven…
      • And return with him in triumph and the Great Day of the Lord!
  • 4th – Look up – Jesus is coming soon… vs. 29-33
    • Pay attention to the signs of the times all around us – realize Jesus is coming soon!
      • If you want to catch a motor to the market – but rather than watching – get distracted…
      • It is not the drivers fault you missed you ride – you were not paying attention!
      • In the same way we need to be paying attention – we do not want to miss our ride!
    • Jesus gives this Parable – when you see the ‘Fig Tree’ blossom – Summer is near
      • When you see a fig tree budding – you know that summer is close by…
      • In the Bible THE Fig Tree is a picture of the Nation of Israel – Mark 11:13
      • In order for the Anti-Christ to come to power – for the Tribulation to begin…
      • Israel must be reborn – Jerusalem must come back under the control of the Jews…
      • When you see Israel blossom – you know the end is very neat!
    • This Generation will by no means pass away… vs. 32
      • May 14th, 1948 ~ Israel was again declared a nation – Israel was reborn…
        • Isaiah 43:5-6 – “I will bring your descendants from the east, And gather you from the west; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’ Bring My sons from afar… from the ends of the earth.”
        • Since 1948 Jewish population in Israel has surged to roughly ~ 6 million…
        • There are more Jews living in Israel today than any other nation on earth…
        • The Generation that sees ‘Israel blossom’ – will also see the ‘End of the Age’…
        • We have seen Israel Blossom – that makes us the last Generation
        • So how long do we have before the Rapture of the church… (2 questions)
      • 1st questions – ‘When exactly did Israel blossom’…
        • Some say – May 14th, 1948 – when Israel was declared a nation…
        • Some say – June 7th, 1967 – when Israel reclaimed the Temple Mount (Jerusalem)…
      • 2nd questions – ‘How long is a Generation’…
        • In the Bible a Generation can be anywhere from 20-100 years…
        • Count 20-100 years from 1948/1967 – it means the rapture is VERY close!
    • How sure can we be we are the last Generation – Jesus is coming… vs. 33
      • Jesus says – Heaven and Earth will pass away – but His words will not!
      • So – you can be VERY SURE – Jesus is coming – VERY SOON!
    • That leaves the obvious question – do we know the exact day and hour – Mark 13:32
      • The Day & Hour referred to here is talking about the Rapture of the church…
      • Not a reference to Jesus 2nd coming – exactly 3½ years after Abomination of desolation
      • So when does the Rapture occur – no one knows – only the Father in Heaven…
      • If we knew when – we might be tempted to live like the devil – then…
      • A month/week/day/ or hour before the rapture – try to get our lives right with God…
      • So – if anyone tells you they know when the Rapture takes place – they are wrong…
      • The point is to live for Jesus every day –in constant expectation of His return…
  • 5th – Be ready… vs. 34-38
    • Do not get caught up in the things of this world…
      • Our hearts might be weighed down because we are hung over from drinking too much…
        • The idea being we are so caught up in having fun – we miss our ride…
        • Ever try and see a drunk trying to catch a motor – at best it’s entertaining…
        • We need to be sober – clear minded – not seeking after pleasure…
        • But looking to please the Lord – serve the Lord – so we are ready to meet the Lord!
      • Our hearts might be weighed down by the cares of this world…
  • How many hours of sleep have we lost worrying about how to feed our families…

Right any wrong relationships with others – be ready in case today is the day…

How many fights have we gotten into over not having enough money…

Rushing around – busy – no time to spare – no time to sit at Jesus feet…

That is why we are worried and troubled – we did not find time for Jesus!

When we take the time to sit at Jesus feet – we are ready to meet Jesus in the air!

Be careful – you do not know when Jesus will come…

Watch and pray – so that we are counted worthy to escape the tribulation that is coming!

If someone told you tomorrow at 1am – a thief would come into your house

You would be ready for him – and nothing would be stolen

But no one knows when a thief will come – that is why they are able to steal…

In the same way you will not know when Jesus is coming – like a thief in the night…

I Thessalonians 5:2 – “For you know quite well that the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night…”

We not know when Jesus will come – but we can ‘Be Ready’…

Be men and women of the Word – men and women of prayer…

We can make sure our heart is right with God – confess our sins…
